Here is a tip on how you can save a few dollars by booking using the Rakuten app. What is Rakuten? Though it has a funny name, it is a legitmate site and I have received almost $700 from Rakuten directly into my Paypal account in the past 6 months from online shopping that I would do anyway.
The image below explains how it works. You can add an extension to your browser or go directly to the Rakuten site to check out the latest cash back deals. These can change frequently. For example, one day Macy’s will have 4% cash back and I have seen it go up to 16% cash back. Usually there are double and triple cash back offerings during holiday times (President’s Day, Black Friday, etc).
I was hesitant to use Rakuten because I thought it meant I could not use my coupons as well. Stores like Macys, Kohls, Belk, etc offer regular coupons but you CAN use them and still get cash back from Rakuten. The only thing I have found that you can NOT do is stack the Rakuten cash back discount with similar apps such as Capital One Cashback.
NOTE: Cash back is deposited into your Paypal account on a quarterly basis but you can see how much cash back to expect each quarter and even view your lifetime earnings. As of this date there is no limit as to how much you can earn.
Here are a couple of examples: Right now if I were to buy a $2000 mattress from Mattress Firm online, with 12% cash back during the Presidents Day Sale, I would receive $240 cash back from Rakuten. Sometimes, you can stack deals offered via American Express. For instance if I wanted to buy luxury bamboo sheets from Cozy Earth, Amex if offering $100 credit if you use their card and spend $300. Rakuten is currently offering 6% cashback and Cozy Earth has a $50 coupon. See how the discounts can add up?
Frequent travelers often love to collect American Express points. Instead of cash back, you can receive American Express points instead from Rakuten. This is a one-time option. Once you set this to Amex points, you cannot change it to cash back. Just FYI.
