5 Reasons to Visit Onset and Cape Cod in the Fall

When people think of the Cape Cod Area, they tend think of long summer weekends on the beach, resting on a lounge chair with a good book. However, the Fall is a great time if not the best time to visit. Here are some reasons why…

  1. The crowds. Lack of crowds that is, no need to be at the beach before 10am to get a good spot or a parking space. Onset Beach in the fall is half as crowded as it was before Labor Day. Want to take a quick hop over the bridge to Cape Cod? In the summer, that quick hop could take you 45 minutes on a weekday. Weekends and holidays could take hours. Most everything is still open, particularly in September. If you want to get that lobster roll without standing in line for 30 minutes, now is the time. You can still take Cape Cod Canal Cruises right from Onset (which quickly sell out during the summer) through early October!

  2. Fall folliage. New England is famous for its vibrant and colorful autumn leaves. Even if you do not take a scenic drive to Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont, there is plenty of colors to be seen locally in Mass. Additionally Massachusetts is known for its cranberry bogs and being the home of Ocean Spray Cranberries headquartered about 20 minutes away in Middleboro. This would be a lovely scenic drive. Or you enjoy lunch at Makepeace Farms in Wareham - their famous Thanksgiving sandwhich on homemade cranberry bread is highly recommended!. After lunch browse their charming country store for gifts like homemade jam, candles, gift baskets, and all things cranberry. You can even schedule a tour of their cranberry bog!

  3. Festivals. There is no lack of fall festivals in the area. Onset has their most popular event, the Harvest Moon Festival in late September each year. If you are a fan of Renaissance Fairs, King Richard’s Faire in nearby Carver is the largest Renaissance festival in the six states of New England. So put on your 16th century costume or just come to enjoy the handmade crafts, foods, and watch the knights in the Jousting Tournament. This event has been held here in the fall each year since 1982.

  4. Weather. The weather is usually perfect. That special time of year where you do not need to run the air conditioning or the heat. Just open the windows for a refreshing sea breeze. And in the evening it is what New Englanders refer to as “sweater weather”. Exploring the area is so much more enjoyable when you are not sweating in the humidity. Take a 20 minute drive to Plymouth and check out Plymouth Rock, the Mayflower, and Plymouth Plantation, now called Plimoth Patuxet Museums. You can even have Thanksgiving dinner there! You can comfortably walk around Boston, Fanuel Hall or visit the Newport Mansions of the Gilded Age.

  5. Lower Rates. Like all seasonal locals the hotel and Airbnb rates drop during the shoulder season. It is also less likely that attractions that require tickets are sold out. Venues may even discounts. This of course includes the Zandy Castle. Check out our lower rates and discounts for the fall.
